Pachai Payir (Green Gram) Gravy


Ingredients:

  • Whole green gram - 1 cup
  • Small onion - 8
  • Tomato - 1
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Green chillies - 3
  • Red chillies - 2
  • Garlic - 3
  • Curry leaves
  • Corriander powder - 2 tbsp
  • Cumin powder - 1 tbsp
  • Asafoetida - a pinch
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Salt
  • Oil

To temper:

  • Ghee - 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves
  • Red chillies - 2

Preparation:

Pressure cook the green gram along with turmeric powder for 3 to 4 whistles and mash it well.

Add oil in a pan and heat it. Once it’s hot, splutter the mustard seeds. To that, add chopped onions, garlic, curry leaves, chilli, tomato and saute till it gets cooked well.

Then, add coriander powder, cumin powder, salt, asafoetida, mashed dhal and bring it to boil.

Temper with the items given under the section “to temper”.

Serve hot with rice.
