Puliyodharai


Ingredients:

  • Cooked rice - 2 cups
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Channa dhal - 2 tbsp
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Red chilli - 3
  • Tamarind extract - 3/4 cup
  • Roasted peanuts - 4 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Salt
  • Oil

To roast and grind:

  • Channa dhal - 2 tbsp
  • Urad dhal - 1 tbsp
  • Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Red chilli - 3
  • Pepper corns - 1/2 tsp

Preparation:

First, dry roast all the ingredients mentioned under “to roast and grind” and grind them into coarse powder.

Add 5 tbsp of oil and let the mustard seeds crackle. To that, add the channa dhal, curry leaves, red chilli, roasted peanuts and saute for few minutes.

Then, add the tamarind extract along with 1 cup of water and turmeric powder and bring it to a boil. Then, add the ground powder, salt and mix well.

Cook 2 cups of rice and let it cool down completely. Add the cooked rice to the mixture and mix well.

Serve hot with papad/vathal.
